The cheaters are winning! Not all winners are cheating, but suspicions grow. Designer steroids, EPO, and growth hormones are all being successfully used in a variety of sports, by athletes all over the world. The IOC and various national committees are very concerned, but they have been relatively ineffective in detecting and penalizing the cheaters.

Some hope ahead? For the first time US Olympic caliber athletes are joining with the USOC to mandate a better and more comprehensive testing program. The clean athletes are tired of being lumped together with the cheaters. Various legal maneuvers in the US make it difficult to impose sanctions, and the rest of the world has noticed.

Unfortunately, the athletic benefits accruing from the use of the banned substances seem to outweigh any health concerns or moral dilemmas on the part of many individual athletes and of many medical advisors or some national committees.
